What is Yoga?
The word Yoga comes from yui, a 5,000 year old Sanskrit word meaning to yoke, join, or unite. The Iyengar school of Yoga defines yui as the “joining or integrating of all aspects of the individual—body, mind, and soul—to achieve a happy, balanced, and useful life.” Reaching kaivalya, emancipation or ultimate freedom, is the aim of Yoga. The science of Yoga uses asanas (postures), focused concentration on specific body parts, and pranayama (breathing techniques) to unify the body with the mind and the mind with the soul.
The Benefits of Yoga
Yoga benefits go well beyond stress management. Regular practice can increase flexibility and improve balance. The pranayama, or breathing techniques, can have positive effects on asthma, depression, lower back pain, and memory. Yoga, combined with diet, aerobic exercise, and meditation, can help with cardiovascular disease rates and blood pressure levels. Yoga helps people cope better with daily demands and to sleep more soundly.

Hatha is gentle with subtle, smooth poses. The focus is on holding the pose while merging
your breathing into your movements. Hatha is the foundation of most Yoga styles.
During the practice, slow, controlled movements and an awareness of how your body
is performing help achieve a calm and graceful state. Hatha is closely related to Iyengar.
Hatha stretches you, works your muscles, gets you more tuned in to your body, and helps lower stress.
Ashtanga is a system of yoga transmitted to the modern world by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois (1915-2009).
This method of yoga involves synchronizing the breath with a progressive series of postures—
a process producing intense internal heat and a profuse, purifying sweat that detoxifies muscles and organs.
The result is improved circulation, a light and strong body, and a calm mind.
Kundalini concentrates on awakening the energy at the base of the spine. Breathing, chanting, and meditation give this practice a spiritual component. Kundalini fully engages you physically and mentally, and can be practiced with a partner.
Gentle / Restorative Yoga
Gentle Restorative focuses on relaxing the body in restful postures. Note that 'rest' is different than sleep. Rest provides the body an opportunity to renew and heal. Countless studies have proven the physical and emotional benefits of this.
This course is designed for people who always wanted to try Yoga but needed to understand more what they are getting into. Detailed instruction will be provided in this one month, twice a week course that will allow everybody to understand not only how the poses are executed but also to understand the health benefits of each pose.

This place has to be by far the best Yoga Center. You feel very peaceful when you walk in. I love Sharon. I rate this place 5 stars. Amazing! G.G.
I have been to dozens of yoga studios and teachers but Sharon Kapp is by far my favorite. Her classes are not just yoga, they are a mindfulness practice, a spiritual journey, a gift you give yourself. She is a true Teacher, a beautiful generous old soul. Other teachers at this studio are each wonderful in their own way and i enjoy their classes tremendously. The Ayurvedic consulting services Sharon provides are simply priceless and helped me get back to my center and understand the way my body, mind and soul coexist and what is needed to keep them in healthy balance. Houston Yoga and Ayurveda is my home away from home. It is a warm and welcoming place with great people that are always there for you. Please go and take advantage of this incredible oasis of peace, serenity and knowledge. Elaina L.

A NEW HAPPY and HEALTHY YOU
Descriptive words that come to mind:
***magical, authentic, peaceful, healing, spiritual, welcoming, a blessing!!!***
Whether you are seeking healing, peace, knowledge, true yoga, holistic medicine that works, or just a spiritual retreat...Look no further my friend. I was in search of a yoga teacher training program and was first welcomed by Sharon's sweet voice over the phone so I came in to check out the place! I felt good about it as soon as I drove onto the property. Sharon's sweet husband Chris gave me the tour (I was in awe of the garden, the crystals, the yoga room, the deck, and the entire everything the whole time haha) and immediately I knew I did not want to spend my money, time, or energy anywhere else... and I couldn't have been more right!!!
I am so so grateful for such a wonderful experience. Sharon and her husband are incredibly kind, warm, and genuine people. I have learned so much from Sharon, both as a student and a patient here. It has truly changed my life for the better on so many levels. Meli M.
